Essential components of Cancer Care at South Bay Hospital include:

  • Cancer Conference (Tumor Board)
  • Cancer Committee
  • Cancer Registry
  • Pathology
  • Chemotherapy Certified Nursing Staff
  • Pain Management Team
  • Nutritional Support
  • Cancer Resource Center

Cancer Conference (Tumor Board)
Cancer Conference provides a multidisciplinary, collaborative format aimed at educating the medical staff and improving the care of cancer patients. These conferences provide a forum to discuss diagnostic evaluations and possible treatment options, share opinions and make recommendations for the development of an individualized plan of care for the cancer patient. This multi-disciplinary team includes Surgery, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Radiology, Pathology and Nursing.

Cancer Care Committee
South Bay Hospital’s Cancer Care Committee meets quarterly to plan, develop and assess cancer related activities at the hospital. This committee is multidisciplinary and includes a wide range of healthcare professionals who are involved in overseeing and guiding our cancer program.

Cancer Registry
The Cancer registry documents all cases of cancer seen at South Bay Hospital. The registry provides information on the incidences of various cancers, enabling the medical staff to evaluate diagnostic and treatment approaches, analyze quality of care, study survival rates and improve the overall care provided. Local cancer statistics are submitted to the Florida Cancer Data Systems (FCDS).

Pathology plays an important role in cancer diagnosis and staging. Molecular testing is completed for breast, lung and colon cancers. This testing provides specific information about the identification and classification of the cancer cells to determine the best therapeutic treatment approach.

Chemotherapy Certified Nursing Staff
Cancer patients are primarily admitted to our second floor the Medical Surgical Unit. Nurses have received specialized training in caring for cancer patients and in the administration of chemotherapy.

Pain Management Team
Using a multidisciplinary approach, our pain management team works closely with patients, nursing and medical staff to ensure patient’s pain needs are met. This team can be consulted to help assess and make recommendations for pain therapies and to provide staff education.

Nutritional Support
According to the National Cancer Institute, about one third of cancer deaths are associated with malnutrition. Therefore ensuring proper nutrition is essential for healing and supporting immune function. After assessing the patient, the dietician provides the patient with nutritional counseling and assists the patient in finding foods that they can tolerate and recommends supplements to improve the use of calories.

Cancer Resource Center
Our resource center provides cancer patients with items to enhance their quality of life and self esteem as they undergo cancer treatments. In addition to mastectomy items, wigs and head coverings, the center provides educational resources, brochures and inspirational books. These items are given to cancer patients free of charge. Hours of operation are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

American Cancer Society
With a shared goal of improving the quality of life for patients with cancer and their families, the American Cancer Society is a valued partner of South Bay Hospital. The American Cancer Society is the national, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.
